Introduction

This degree programme provides you with a comprehensive introduction to the biosciences; equipping you with knowledge and skills which span the discipline from ecology to the molecular sciences and biochemistry.

What knowledge and skills will I acquire? By the time you graduate you should:

understand major issues and challenges in biomedical sciences;
be able to understand and describe biological systems;
have the skills and understandings to design and conduct experiments and investigations;
appreciate the moral, social and ethical issues associated with research and development in the biosciences.
What are my career prospects?

Biology graduates are multi-skilled professionals who are qualified for a wide range of careers, including general roles in areas such as management, accountancy and human resources.  Biology graduates are also highly sought after in commercial and public sectors, with many working in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, research institutions, health services and forensic science.  The programme provides a strong foundation for further graduate level study.

What will I study?

At level 1, you will learn about:

cell structure and function
biochemistry, molecular biology and the chemical principles of life
genetics
biodiversity
biochemical methods and analysis
statistics
organic chemistry
human and plant pathogens
At level 2, your knowledge will be further developed through the study of:

microbiology
molecular and cell biology techniques
disease
cell signalling
In the final year, you will undertake a research project, spanning both semesters.  Alongside your project, you will study bioinformatics and gene expression.  You may also choose three from the following options:

protein structure and function
biochemical messengers
genome organization and evolution
genome maintenance and rearrangement
environmental microbiology, and
biotechnology
 

Academic Requirements:

The University accepts a wide variety of school, college and foundation qualifications such as A-Level, AS-Level, IB and other equivalent overseas qualifications.

English Language Requirements:

All students must have acceptable English language qualifications to study at the University. Various English qualifications are acceptable including:

IELTS 5.5 for year 1 entry , or 6.5 for advanced standing; or
TOEFL 520 (paper-based), or 190 (computer-based) or 75 (iBT) for year 1 entry; or
TOEFL 570 (paper-based), or 230 (computer-based) or 88 (iBT) for advanced standing, or
XJTLU English test.

1.Photocopy of valid passport
With name, passport number & expiration date, and photo included
2.Passport photo
A recent passport-sized photo of the applicant
3.English proficiency test certificate
For example, IELTS or TOEFL, only for applicant whose native language is not English.
4.Two letters of recommendation
From professor or associate professor or equivalents
5.High school academic transcript
6.High school graduate certificate
Graduation certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.
